Hikers near Maili Pillboxes evacuated as HFD responds to brush fire

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Firefighters are responding to a brush fire in west Oahu.
Shortly after noon, crews were called out to the Maili Pillbox area.
The Honolulu Fire Department evacuated hikers in the area and kept others from entering the trail.
The right westbound lane of Farrington Highway was closed in the area for emergency vehicles.
It’s unclear how large the fire is in total. Images from the scene received around 1 p.m. showed most of the fire out, with burnt brush up the mountainside.
Officials also closed the right lane near 87-1206 Farrington Highway so emergency vehicles could use the space in their response to the fire.
This fire comes as a Red Flag Warning remains issued for leeward areas of the state, meaning there is an elevated fire risk. Conditions under a Red Flag Warning include high winds, low humidity, and low chances of rain, meaning fires can spread very quickly. The warning is set to last until 6 p.m. Friday.
HNN has declared Friday a First Alert Weather day.
At last check, there were no evacuation orders for homes or nearby communities.
HFD remains on scene continuing their efforts.
